ZOE A BRIGHT LIGHT AMONGST THE TEAM AT MARITIMO

Apprentice cabinet maker  Zoe DePryck, who joined Maritimo in March 2017, has won the TAFE Queensland Cabinet Marker – Shopfitter First Year Apprentice of The Year award.

She is one of more than 10 apprentices currently employed under the Maritimo apprentice program and according to Maritimo’s General Manager Operations, Phil Candler, she has thrown down the challenge to her male counterparts to beat her next year.

“Zoe is very proud of her win and we are very proud of her, “said Candler. “She is very good and a well deserved winner and so much so that in September this year we were contacted by TAFE and asked if we were happy for her to start studying her second year as she had already completed year one ahead of time.”

Candler said Maritimo placed a great deal of importance on the apprentice program where each apprentice was placed with a senior experienced tradesman who mentors them as they work their way through the system.

He said the company currently has eight potential apprentices on trial for a three months period working throughout the manufacturing plant and the plan is to monitor them until the new year and then start the process to indenture those who show potential.

“We also have a  number of potential mature aged apprentices wanting to start studies and as these guys are already part of the Maritimo team we consider them well worth spending the time and money on to improve their skills,” said Candler. “These people are the future of our industry and as we ramp up our employment levels to keep pace with demand they will form a significant part of our future.”

Maritimo CEO Garth Corbitt said the company had already made a significant investment into its training and apprenticeship program and was expanding that in 2019.
